Teen Services

YMCA Teen Services offers a variety of programming opportunities for Middle School and High School teens throughout the Upstate.

The FYI

The FYI: Furman YMCA Initiative, will open April 2008. This drop-in teen center for High School youth will provide a safe, comfortable teen centered space for High Schoolers to hang out with their friends, and take part in structured programming opportunities. The space will be free to all Greenville County High Schoolers. Programming will include Battle of the Bands, Dance Lessons, SAT/ACT prep classes, and two pinnacle programs: Music & Mentors and Service Bank. Our Music & Mentors program will provide teens with the opportunity to participate in a variety of individual and group music lessons, including Guitar lessons, Drum lessons, and Song writing workshops. Lessons will be taught by area musicians and artists. The Service Bank will provide a central location for teens to learn about High School service opportunities within the community. Teens will be able to log their hours and "cash them in" for a variety of things including rafting trips, IPods and gift certificates to area restaurants. All programming at the space will be free of charge to Greenville Teens. Support from the community will make it possible to open the space, and to expand on programming opportunities as the needs arise.

Teen Camp

The YMCA Teen Camp, which serves over 500 Middle Schoolers, provides teens with the opportunity to participate in a variety of specialty classes including Skateboarding, Paintball, Camping Skills, Fencing, Fitness, and Team building programs. Last summer we awarded $35,000 in financial assistance to families so their teens can participate in these programs.

Leaders In Action

The YMCA leaders in Action programs provides 60 Middle Schoolers with the opportunity to increase their awareness of and empathy for the community where they live. We also provide monthly service opportunities for teens to give back to their community. In the past year, this team contributed 1500 hours of service learning within Greenville and the surrounding communities. Teens also take part in nearly 30 hours of leadership development and team building sessions.
